01

What it is

At latitudes like Spain’s, with indoor lives and months of little sun, deficiency is common. K2 as MK-7 comes from fermented foods such as Japanese natto. They are combined because K2 activates the proteins that bind calcium in bone. Its role in the arteries is being studied, but it has not been proven in people.

02

What it is used for

The quiz suggests it when your answers justify it. It usually appears with these goals:

03

What the evidence says

Strong

Consistent trials and reviews in people, or health claims authorised in the EU.

Authorised EU claim Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and to the normal function of the immune system. Correcting a deficiency is its best-established use; with normal levels, taking more has no proven benefit.

YearWhat was studiedWhat was foundSource
2013Bone (K2): good evidenceMK-7 at 180 µg a day for 3 years reduced bone density loss in postmenopausal women. Knapen et al.Osteoporosis International
2022Falls and fractures: moderate, dose-dependent evidenceMeta-analysis: 800–1,000 IU a day was associated with a lower risk of fractures and falls; lower or higher doses were not. Kong et al.Endocrinology and Metabolism

What to look for on the label

  • D3, not D2.
  • K2 as all-trans MK-7.
  • If you are vegan, D3 from lichen.
05

Precautions

  • If you take anticoagulants (acenocoumarol, warfarin), choose vitamin D3 on its own, without K2: K2 interferes with their effect.
  • If you have high calcium or kidney disease, or take thiazide diuretics or digoxin, ask first.

Where to find it

Products whose label meets what this profile asks for: form, dose per serving and nothing that contradicts it. Three at most: quality of the active comes first and, among the best, we look for one option in each price range. We choose by composition, not by who pays. The shops are European or ship to Europe.
