CranberryPAC

American cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) is rich in proanthocyanidins (PAC), compounds that in the laboratory make it harder for certain bacteria to stick to the bladder wall.

01

What it is

That is why, in a supplement, the amount of PAC matters, not the milligrams of fruit.

02

What the evidence says

Promising

Trials in people that point the same way, but still few, small or funded by the manufacturer.

A Cochrane review (2023) found favourable results, with moderate certainty, especially in women with recurrent urinary discomfort; for other groups the evidence is scarce.

YearWhat was studiedWhat was foundSource
2023Urinary wellbeingReview of 50 trials with 8,857 people: with moderate certainty, it reduced the risk of symptomatic urinary tract infections, including in women with recurrent episodes. In older people in care and in pregnant women it showed no benefit. Williams et al.Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews

What to look for on the label

  • The mg of PAC and the measurement method (DMAC).
  • Without that figure there is no way to know the real dose.
04

Precautions

  • If you take anticoagulants (warfarin) or have had kidney stones, ask first.
  • If you have pain or burning when passing urine, fever or blood in your urine, see a doctor: a supplement does not treat an infection.

Where to find it

Products whose label meets what this profile asks for: form, dose per serving and nothing that contradicts it. Three at most: quality of the active comes first and, among the best, we look for one option in each price range. We choose by composition, not by who pays. The shops are European or ship to Europe.
