01

What it is

Beyond cooking, it has been used for mood since traditional Persian medicine. Its active compounds are crocin and safranal; in laboratory studies they act on serotonin and dopamine.

02

What it is used for

The quiz suggests it when your answers justify it. It usually appears with these goals:

What the evidence says

Promising

Trials in people that point the same way, but still few, small or funded by the manufacturer.

Small trials show effects on mood and on premenstrual mood swings compared with placebo.

YearWhat was studiedWhat was foundSource
2025The most relevant for Dosis12-week RCT in 202 adults with mild depressive symptoms: 28 mg of saffron a day improved the low-mood score compared with placebo. On the other measures, such as stress or general wellbeing, there were no differences. (One of the authors works for the extract’s manufacturer.) Lopresti et al.Journal of Nutrition
2019The broad meta-analysisReview of 23 studies: a large positive effect on symptoms of low mood and anxiety compared with placebo. The authors themselves detected publication bias, so the real effect is probably smaller. Marx et al.Nutrition Reviews

What to look for on the label

  • A standardised extract (safranal and crocins) at the dose used in trials. affron® is a Spanish extract.
05

Precautions

  • If you take antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs), triptans or anticoagulants, or have bipolar disorder, ask first.
  • High doses of saffron are not safe in pregnancy.

We link to the shop; we do not sell anything. Today we earn no commission on any link. If we ever do, the link will say so and the selection will not change: the label decides. Labels checked on 2 November 2026; check the one on the pack before you buy. All these shops deliver to the EU; some of their pages open in Spanish. How we are funded.
